Laak Wins PartyPoker Premier League IV First Heat
February 22, 2010
The air was atmosphere was practically sizzling with tenseness as the players sat down for the first heat of the PartyPoker Premier League IV. With a field that boasted some of the best pros in the industry like JC Tran, Daniel Negreanu, and Vanessa Rousso among others, it was Phil “the Unabomber” Laak who once again managed to come out on top, earning him a stellar start to this year’s PartyPoker festivities.
Immense Luck + Immense Skill = Victory
One of the best ways to ensure a deep finish in a tournament is to make sure that you start off big. Amass a large amount of chips early on in the games and you’ll have something to fall back on during the later parts, when the swings become too large and too decisive. This, of course, requires a considerable amount of skill, patience, and prudence. It also won’t hurt at all if you have Lady Luck on your side too. Luck and Skill are the two things that comprise the formula for victory, they were also the two things that Phil “the Unabomber” Laak had a surplus of as he sat down for the First Heat of the PartyPoker Premier League IV. It took eight grueling hours before he could be crowned as the victor, and he had to pit his talents against those of other famous pros the whole time too, particularly against JC Tran, who came out on second place. Other pros who were also vying for the top spot were Daniel Negreanu, Ian Frazer, Luke Schwartz, Vanessa Rousso, Roland de Wolfe, and Yevgeniy Timoshenko.

Despite getting seemingly inferior hands, Laak still displayed great daring and took wisely calculated risks. There were several incidents wherein Laak was the one who won the key pots, easily allowing him to secure the top spot. One example of this is the last hand of the night, when Laak faced off against Tran. Laak held KS7S while Tran held AC5S. At first, Tran was at an advantage, but when the board came up as QH7H2C9H4C, Laak easily gained the upper hand. The two went all in and it was Laak who took the win.
A Wonderful Start
This win will certainly help Laak secure a seat in the final table for this year’s PartyPoker Premier League, especially with the point system that PartyPoker has set up. He earned a considerable 16 points for reaching first place and was also able to take home a sizeable $32,000. Laak will come back for Heat 2 of the Premier League, so we should all stand by to see if his luck holds up for the rest of the events.
