Full Tilt $25K Heads Up Championships Recap

May 26, 2009

Full Tilt hosted their second $25,000 heads up championship this past weekend and once again the tournament was a success. Many big name players such as Phil Ivey, Andy Bloch, Erick Lindgren and defending champion David Singer came out to try to take down the big first place prize. In total 63 players entered the tournament, which was 1 less than the tournament was capped at last time around.

The first round included the very fast exit of tournament favorite Phil Ivey after 5 hands when Phil went in with a (9,5) off suit against a (9,10) of diamonds on a (6c, 4d, 7d, 9c) board. It just seems like Phil can’t try unless there is millions of dollars on the line. Even at $25K buy-in doesn’t bring out his A game. Some other notable matches from the first round included David Singer defeating Toto Leonidas, Tuff_Fish taking out Erick Lindgren, David Pham beating Tony G and AeJones beating Andy Bloch.

In the second round of the tournament the biggest match up was definitely Tom ‘Durrrr’ Dwan against FullFlush. FullFlush has been chirping Durrrr for the past few months saying that he has a big edge on Durrrr and will gladly take him up on the Durrrr Challenge. This battle didn’t really turn out the way Durrrr would have hoped with his (Q,Q) losing to Full Flush’s (10,10) when a 10 came on the turn. I guess the 10’s weren’t so good for Durrrr this time and Phil Hellmuth probably had a big grin on his face when he heard about this bad beat. After the second round was all said and done 16 players remained including the three Full Tilt red David’s: Benefield, Singer and Pham.

The round of 16 saw the end of David Singer’s title defense when he lost to theASHMAN103. David Pham and FullFlush were also eliminated in this round. When the first day of competition was all said and done the four players that remained included David Benefield, yogiblair, TheAshman103 and WinnerFish.

The action picked up again on Sunday with David Benefield defeating WinnerFish and TheAshman103 beating yogiblair. Benefield was not able to win the title for the Full Tilt pro’s and the $551,250 went to TheAshman103. It seems pretty fitting that the eventual champion of this event had to go through the defending champ in order to take down the tourney. Benefield took home $315K for his efforts.

A lot of railbirds were expecting to see Chris Ferguson and Huck Seed in the event considering they were both on the Full Tilt page promoting the tournament. It was also hoped by many that Patrik Antonius and Gus Hansen would show up and test their tournament heads up skills. Regardless of these absences the tournament still ran smoothly and was a success.
