Thang Luu Wins $1500 Omaha Hi-Low At WSOP…Again!
An absolutely unbelievable feat has been achieved at the 2009 WSOP. In Event #3, the Omaha Hi-Low Split 8 or Better tournament, Thang Luu has accomplished what many would consider to be impossible.

In 2007, Luu took second in this event. In 2008 he won the event. What would he do in 2009? Why, he won it of course. Luu’s achievement has to be considered one of the greatest achievements in poker history. The last player to finish as champion or runner-up in the same tournament 3 years in a row is Johnny Chan when he took first in the Main Event in ’87 & ’88 and second against Phil Hellmuth in 1989.

In 2007, it was a $2000 buy-in event and Luu outlasted 533 opponents to take second place against Frankie O’Dell. In 2008, Luu had to beat a field of 833 players before being crowned the champ. In 2009, he beat 918 players.

In this year’s event, when the final table got down to 3-handed, Luu overwhelmed his opponents with raw aggression. Prior to 3-handed play Luu had been playing very patient. His opponents didn’t know how to respond to this aggression and he simply steamrolled them until the title was his.

Born in Vietnam, Thang ‘Tiger Luu’ Luu moved to the United States when he was 17 years old. He worked at the Rio Hotel & Casino as a table games dealer before making poker his full-time profession. He currently lives in Las Vegas where he typically plays cash games in the $80/160 range. Aside from large Omaha Hi-Low tournaments, Luu doesn’t play in many tournaments. His favorite games are Badugi, Razz, and 2-7 Triple Draw.

Surprisingly, Luu wasn’t wearing any poker room logos on his shirt or hat. Although this isn’t a televised event, you would think Pokerstars or Full Tilt would’ve wanted to attach their name to him. Let’s hope they recognize him in future Omaha events.

There is still plenty of time to qualify for the 2009 WSOP Main Event at Pokerstars. For a bonus of 100% up to $50, write down Pokerstars promo code and register to play.
